Social Work Cultural Competence

As with all areas of the social work process, cultural competence is essential when engaging and assessing a child’s concerns. Being culturally competent includes understanding the unique needs of your client and asking how those needs can be fulfilled. Using an empowerment perspective treating clients as experts on their lives and their needs is essential. Not only does this establish your commitment to being culturally sensitive and aware, but it will enhance the therapeutic relationship. While it is essential to learn and master social work skills and techniques to be a successful practitioner, another significant indicator of a successful intervention is the relationship a social worker builds with his or her client. Some research suggests that the quality of the therapeutic relationship will account for 30% of the clinical outcome of the treatment (Miller, Duncan, and Hubble, 2005, as stated in Walsh, 2010, p. 7). Exhibiting a dedication to learning about a client’s culture, history, and current environmental factors exemplifies a social worker’s desire to build that client–worker bond.

For this Assignment, read the case study for Claudia (attached) and find two to three scholarly articles on social issues surrounding immigrant families.

In a 2- to 4-page paper, explain how the literature informs you about Claudia and her family when assessing her situation.

  • Describe two social issues related to the course-specific case study for Claudia that inform a culturally competent social worker.
  • Describe culturally competent strategies you might use to assess the needs of children.
  • Describe the types of data you would collect from Claudia and her family in order to best serve them.
  • Identify other resources that may offer you further information about Claudia’s case.
  • Create an eco-map to represent Claudia’s situation. Describe how the ecological perspective of assessment influenced how the social worker interacted with Claudia.
  • Describe how the social worker in the case used a strengths perspective and multiple tools in her assessment of Claudia. Explain how those factors contributed to the therapeutic relationship with Claudia and her family.

Support your Assignment with specific references to the resources. Be sure to provide full APA citations for your references.

Capstone Project

The aim of this Capstone Project is to develop a research report  integrating knowledge gained from previous submissions that demonstrates  your ability to effectively utilize research pertinent to a social  issue addressed in some capacity by a health and human services setting.  As part of this culminating submission, you will provide a succinct but  efficient overview of content areas examined in your written  assignments from Weeks One through Four that will aid in the development  of an original intervention (i.e., strategy, application, or technique)  for human service professionals to utilize for your selected social  issue. This model intervention must be of your own design as opposed to a  review of an existing practice used to address this issue. You can,  however, use your knowledge of best practices to inform your  intervention. The Capstone Project is intended to demonstrate your  mastery of all learning outcomes related to the B.A. program in Health  and Human Services; therefore, successful completion will require  reflection, critical thinking, and knowledge of subject matter areas  addressed in previous coursework. You are strongly encouraged to refer  to the culmination of resources (e.g., textbooks, articles, websites,  library resources, etc.) in addition to those provided in the course in  the development of your submission.

The Capstone Project will include five components. The first four  parts will involve briefly summarizing the main points from each of your  previous written assignments. Do not copy and paste content from these  submissions.

Part I: Background of Social Issue (Week One Assignment; 1 page):

  • Describe your selected social issue, its importance, and pertinent background information.
  • Evaluate the impact of this social issue on the delivery of health  and human services efforts (e.g., formal organizational responses by the  U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, resulting legislation,  policies, etc.).

Part II: Theory and Research Related to Social Issue (Week Two Assignment; 1 page):

  • Develop a brief research-based report demonstrating research theory  and methodology by analyzing the scholarly literature related to this  topic, including theories explaining the problem as well as research  studies and their associated methods and outcomes.

Part III: Best Practices Related to Social Issue (Week Three Assignment; 1 page):

  • Apply a working knowledge of U.S. health and human services delivery  of care by explaining best practices related to the issue. What  interventions, strategies, or approaches have been shown to be most  effective as evidenced by research?

Part IV: Human Service Professionals Related to Social Issue (Week Four Assignment; 1 page):

  • Explain how and where human service professionals are involved in  direct practice with populations affected by this social issue.
  • Examine effective oral and written communication skills needed for these professionals to be successful.
  • Analyze culturally competent health and human services elements  necessary for service delivery related to clients facing social issue.

Part V: Model Intervention (four to six pages):

  • Lastly, apply your knowledge of U.S. health and human services  delivery of care as a whole to develop a model intervention in the form  of a service, program, or initiative (from your Week Three Assignment  proposal) for human service professionals who are working directly with  clients facing this particular issue. This intervention must be unique  in its approach and must be sufficiently supported by scholarly sources.

Specifically, you are to do the following:

  • Describe the intervention in detail: what it is, how and why it will  be used, what makes it unique to other approaches, the population that  will receive it,and how the best practice will be integrated into the  intervention.
  • Describe aspects of the delivery setting in which the intervention  will be used, such as location/setting (e.g., social/human services  agency, healthcare facility, in the field, etc.) and professionals  involved (e.g., roles/duties, necessary competencies and skills  required, etc.).
  • Determine the components of successful health and human service  delivery relationships at the (a) individual, (b) family, (c) group, (d)  organizational, and (e) community levels. How will these components be  used to support your intervention?
  • Describe how you will apply technology (i.e., specific tools and  resources) to deliver the intervention to clients facing the social  issue.
  • Assess the intervention’s perceived strengths and limitations.
  • Explain how the intervention will be evaluated to determine its effectiveness.

A description of the campaign you selected.

Review the following existing national health education campaigns and examine the traits of professionalism within the health education field.

For this discussion, you have been asked to create a short three-to five-minute presentation for the next city council meeting in your community to launch one of these campaigns. The goal of your presentation is to get the council to approve it, spend the money to implement it, and track its progress. You must apply traits of professionalism as you present your case to council.

You can use Jing (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.Screencast-o-Matic (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.YouTube (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site., or any alternative software program to create this presentation. The video can be you speaking to the camera and presenting it live to city council or a PowerPoint presentation with audio (or a screencast of your presentation). Remember, both require that you utilize leadership skills and traits of professionalism that you must possess for giving presentations as a health educator; thus, lounging on the couch in your pajamas is not appropriate for your video, and you will be given a zero on the discussion. Some characteristics that you may consider incorporating include humor, storytelling, facts only, pace, and volume. Let your campaign topic and creativity guide your decision on what to do.

To begin your presentation, fully research one of the campaigns listed above and determine what you will need to do to convince council to jump on your idea. You are only allowed to present your case for up to five minutes, so you will need to be clear and precise in your remarks.

Some of the areas to address in your presentation include

  • A description of the campaign you selected.
  • The campaign’s importance.
  • The campaign’s relevancy to your community (e.g. why ask for a children’s health program when your city’s population comprises mostly senior citizens?).
  • An explanation of costs.
  • An explanation of why it’s worth the cost.
  • A plea to get a nod of approval from council to begin.

Once you have completed your presentation, copy and paste the URL link to your screencast or video in your discussion forum response section. Your presentation must utilize at least two scholarly sources, in addition to your textbook. The Scholarly, Peer Reviewed, and Other Credible Sources (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site.table offers additional guidance on appropriate source types. Sources must be cited according to 6th edition APA format as outlined in the Ashford Writing Center in the In-Text Citation Guide (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. and In-Text Citation Helper (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. video. Please be sure to view the Quick ‘n’ Dirty (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. tutorial for more information on the Ashford University Library, the research process, and library search tips.

Due to the short time limit of your presentation, you do not need to include a reference slide within the PowerPoint itself; however, you are required to include your APA References List (Links to an external site.)Links to an external site. within the discussion post along with your screencast URL link. If you are presenting a live video, please do the same and list your references in the discussion box with the URL link.

Guided Response: Review several of your classmates’ presentations/videos. Imagine you are a member of that community’s city council. Provide a substantive response to at least two of your peers commenting on the following:

  • Explain how their presentation was or was not effective, pointing out at least four specific elements in your explanation (e.g. tone of voice, formal dress (if video), clear message, etc. Refer to Chapter 8 of your textbook for more details).
Note: Do not focus on content here; this is about their presentation skills.
  • Indicate whether you did or did not receive enough information on the campaign to understand it. Then, describe at least one element that could have been added to improve the presentation. That element could be content-related or presentation skills focused. (Please do not just say the presentation was great and nothing should be added. No presentation is ever 100%. Use your critical thinking skills and examine a way in which the presentation could be improved.)
  • If they asked for approval of their proposal, explain why you would vote for or against it (If they did not ask for approval in the presentation, please note that in your response and do not cast a vote).

Workplace Culture and Competence in Human Service Organizations

Workplace Culture and Competence in Human Service Organizations

Prepare: Prior to beginning this discussion question, read Chapter 5 of Making Strategy Count in the Health and Human Services Sector and  select a minimum of one scholarly article from the Ashford library that  examines the role of workplace culture within a health and/or human  services setting of your choice (e.g., community clinic, social services  agency, care facility, etc.) . The Olavarria, Beaulac, Bélanger, Young,  & Arbry (2009) article is a recommended source that provides more  insight into the issue of organizational cultural competence within  health and human service organizations (it may be used, but does not  replace your required scholarly resource).

Reflect: As you read in Chapter 5 of the textbook,  the term “culture” is not limited to our understanding of cultural  competency as it relates to client interaction; it is also applicable to  our understanding of aspects related to the work environment. In this  discussion, we will reflect upon the concept of “workplace culture,” as  described in the text, and analyze its pertinence in the development of  effective strategy. We will then take this concept a step further and  apply it to the notion of organizational cultural competence (see Week 5  Guidance for more details).

Write: Summarize your selected scholarly article  (e.g., its aims/purpose along with relevant content or topic areas).  Next, analyze culturally competent elements, as they relate to workplace  culture, that are necessary for effective service delivery in the  setting discussed in the article (you may select elements that are  discussed in the article or general elements applicable to health and  human service organizations that are supported by a scholarly source).  Finally,  explain how some of the types of disconnects between strategy  and culture  (as identified on page 76 in your textbook) might impact an  organization’s ability to be culturally competent, either in the  workplace or in direct client interaction.

Public Health Research Paper

  • Your paper needs headers. Use the exact ones described in the rubric. (1. Public Health Problem; 2. How to Solve the Public Health Problem; 3. Public Health in the Future). My topic is HIV.
  • Make sure it is easy to tell the difference between your examples, so we know you are hitting the two required examples in every category. When discussing your opinion, clearly write “I believe/my opinion.”
  • Quotations are not allowed. If you use a quotation, 10 points will be deducted EACH time. An example of a quote, TA Melissa said “Quotations are not allowed.”
  • Follow the rubric: do not write under the page limit and do not write over the page limit. You are allowed to have more sources and it is ok if that part of the paper goes over.
  • Sources: You need to have scholarly, peer-reviewed sources. Publications to the CDC, etc, although scientific, are not necessarily peer-reviewed. Same with the NIH study website. For NIH and other government funders, the studies that received grants need to publish summaries, but the methodology and the findings have not been scientifically reviewed. If you are unsure a source is scientific and peer-reviewed, google the journal. They will describe their process.

Turnitin Policy:

Your paper will be checked for plagiarism and similarity against other sources online through turnitin. Turnitn will highlight a section in your paper if it believes that it is too similar to other sources. This is the easiest way to lose points on this paper. If turnitin finds your paper to have a 1-5% match, no points will be deducted. If turnitin finds your paper to have a 6-10% match, 10 points will be deducted. Anything over and YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO ON THIS PAPER.

Human Service Professionals Related to the Social Issue

As you are aware from your academic and/or professional pursuits, the human services field encompasses a broad range of career opportunities to engage with clients through direct practice, community involvement, and advocacy. According to the National Organization for Human Services (n.d.), the  human services field involves “…meeting human needs through an interdisciplinary knowledge base, focusing, on prevention as well remediation of problems, and maintaining a commitment to improving the overall quality of life of service populations” (para. 1).

As part of your continued efforts to exhaustively assess aspects related to your social issue of interest, your task in the Week Four assignment will involve focusing your attention toward the human service professionals who engage in providing services that meet the needs of groups affected by it.

In your examination of this area, you will

  • Describe two to three examples of human service careers      that are aligned with your selected social issue in some capacity. Given      the diverse nature of professional endeavors that can be undertaken within      your selected topic, possible careers may include those listed below. You      may also wish to review the Occupational Outlook Handbook (Links      to an external site.)Links to an external site. provided by the      Bureau of Labor Statistics (2014):
    • Case manager
    • Outreach worker
    • Child welfare worker
    • Client advocate
    • Counselor
    • Life coach
    • Human services manager
    • Policymaker
  • Discuss their core professional responsibilities as      they relate to your social issue. HRM Adds Value to the Firm

Week 4 – Discussion 2

Your initial discussion thread is due on Day 3 (Thursday) and you have until Day 7 (Monday) to respond to your classmates. Your grade will reflect both the quality of your initial post and the depth of your responses. Refer to the Discussion Forum Grading Rubric under the Settings icon above for guidance on how your discussion will be evaluated.

HRM Adds Value   to the Firm

Consider the proposition that HRM adds value to the firm. Also, examine the topic of “Marginal Utility Analysis” and how it is used to make a case about the value of HRM. How do HRM practices and systems add value to a firm? What is the basis for an argument for or against this proposition? Present your views in 200 words or more in your discussion post. Use at least one scholarly source in your response to support your ideas.  Respond to at least two of your classmates’ posts. Remember to properly cite your sources.

Describe the problem of obesity in the United States and discuss the role of the built environment in exacerbating such problem

Before you begin this assignment, read through the Home page and the required readings. Specifically view the Part 1: Public health & environmental approaches to obesity prevention

at http://vimeopro.com/aptrmodules/phlm/video/75319797

This video is part of Public Health Learning Modules project funded by the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and developed by Temple University Department of Public Health and the Association for Prevention Teaching and Research as a free teaching resource for public health professionals.

For this component of the Session Long Project, you will describe current environmental strategies, practices, and recommendations to build and promote health. Your task is to submit a paper that responds to the following questions:

  1. Describe the problem of obesity in the United States and discuss the role of the built environment in exacerbating such problem.
  2. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention came out with recommended prevention strategies to address the problem of obesity. Describe the three environmental strategies related to food access that were highlighted in the video presentation.
  3. Conduct your own literature search and identify two community-level strategies that have been shown to increase physical activity.  Be sure to cite your sources to support your perspective.

Discussion Post Response

Cristina Thibeault Discussion

1.  In your initial post, explain how reimbursement differs between PAR and nonPar charges.

NonPar “ Nonparticipating Providers is when a patient goes to an out of network/nonparticipating  doctors office and they have no set contract with the physician and the insurance company.  The patient is usually expected to pay the difference between the insurance payment and the providers fee.

Par “Participating Providers” is when there is a contract involved with the health insurance plan and accepts whatever the plan pays for the procedures or services performed. Participating providers are not allowed to bill patients for the difference between the contracted rate and their normal fee. (Green & Rowell, 2017)

Question 1: Calculate the following amounts for a PAR who bills Medicare:

-Submitted charge (based on provider’s regular fee for office visit) is $75
-Medicare physician fee schedule (PFS) is $60
-Coinsurance amount (paid by patient or supplemental insurance) is $12

-Medicare payment (80% of the allowed amount is?  $48

-Medicare write-off (not to be paid by Medicare or the beneficiary?  $15

Question 2: Calculate the following amounts for a nonPar who bills Medicare:

-Submitted charge (based on provider’s regular fee) is $650
-NonPAR Medicare physician fee schedule allow payment is $450

-Limiting charge (115% of MPFS allowed amount) is? $491.63

-Medicare payment (80% of the MPFS allowed amount) is?  $342

-Beneficiary is billed the balance of the limiting charge $149.63

-The Medicare write-off (not to be paid by Medicare of the beneficiary) is? $158.37

Explanation:

The charge based on provider was $650.00 and the nonPar MPFS allowed amount was $450.00. The limiting MPFS 450-(450X5%)X115%, so 427.50 X 115% gives you  $491.63 Now you get the $427.50 multiply that by the 80% and you get the $342.00. Now the final step is getting the $650.00 of the submitted charge and subtracting it from the limiting charge of $491.63 gives you $158.37 the Medicare write-off amount,

post 2

Kelsey Choate Week 3 DiscussionCOLLAPSE

Cuppett explains that nonparticipating providers (nonPARs) can submit claim-by-claim assignments, while participating providers (PARs) “have an agreement with Medicare to ‘accept assignment’ on all Medicare claims.” According to Green & Rowell, nonPARs cannot charge the Medicare beneficiary more than difference between what Medicare reimburses and the limiting charge and can only report the limiting charge as their fee. Green & Rowell also report that PARs report their actual fees to Medicare but adjust the uncollectable charge when they receive payment.

1. Calculate the following amounts for a PAR who bills Medicare:

Medicare payment (80% of the allowed amount) is?

(MPFS x 80%)

$60 x 80%

$48

Medicare write-off (not to be paid by Medicare or the beneficiary)?

(submitted charge – MPFS)

$75 – $60

$15

2. Calculate the following amounts for a nonPar who bills Medicare:

Limiting charge (115% of MPFS allowed amount) is?

[MPFS – (MPFS x 5%) ] x 115%

[ $450 – ($450 x 5%) ] x 115%

[$427.50] x 115%

$491.63

Medicare payment (80% of the MPFS allowed amount) is?

(MPFS x 80%)

$427.50 x 80%

$342.00

3. Beneficiary is billed the balance of the limiting charge $149.63

The Medicare write-off (not to be paid by Medicare of the beneficiary) is?

(submitted charge – limiting charge)

$650 – $491.63

$158.37
