If I had a friend who was questioning why the Pastor always translated a meaning of a word from English to what it means in the original Hebrew or Greek, I would first be understanding because I used to not understand why either. I would have the thought of something like,” whats the point of him saying that, it really does not change the way I see the verse.” Then I would go on to explain why. First, I would begin to explain that in order for us to truly understand the passage we must dive deeper than the surface level of the passage. If we take a scripture from a magnet on our fridge we can easily misuse and misunderstand the scripture, but if we take the scripture from our fridge and open our bibles and study not only the verse but the context around we will be able to understand what the passage truly means on a deeper more intimate level. A good start would be to understand who wrote the book, then determine who the audience is. From there start at the beginning of the chapter or even the beginning of the book and break it up piece by piece. Then continue to find out what the historical context is. What world did they live in while this story was being taken place? If you do not understand a word use an expository dictionary of some sort or even look at different translations of the bible to better understand the material. Then look at the Greek and Hebrew meaning of the word; the origin of the language it was written in can bring you back to understanding the historical context and a deeper meaning to the word. Also consulting an expert in the language can really help. If you really what to know what the passage means and not just a surface level saying that barley gets you by, these are the ways you can build a more intimate relationship with Christ and His word. That is why our Pastor shares the knowledge he has with the original language to help us better understand the word even though we may not realize it just yet. All this may seem like a lot of work but once you start building that intimacy with the word, you will realize the importance and worth it has and will not settle for anything less.

Amber Curry Option 2

I chose option 2 for my forum. We are going to say that the friend’s name is Judy and my forum will be as if I am directly speaking to Judy.

Judy, my dear friend, what you do not realize is that Pastor Edgewater is actually helping you understand the passage better! Unless you frequently study the Word, correctly, you are only seeing the surface of the meaning of the passages. Here, let me explain. Consider for a minute, how the meanings of words change over time. Since words do change, there are some words that disappear from common vocabulary or based on your location, so it is important to study them and necessary to properly study them to understand their meaning. Word study is important because it will help you develop a better understanding of the passage. Let me share with you 5 steps to Word study. Number 1 is to select your words out of the context that you would like to study. Number 2 is to identify all the places the word is located throughout the Scriptures. Number 3 is to determine what the word could mean. Number 4 is to determine that the word does mean. Lastly, in Step 5, check your work. So, in conclusion, even though you might be pretty sure you understand a passage, remember that words have changed through the years, and even though you may think that you know the meaning but your definition may be different than the original meaning. Here are some verses as well that I feel may apply to our topic.

“Give instruction to a wise man, and he will be still wiser, teach a righteous man, and he will increase in learning. The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom and the knowledge of the Holy One is insight.” Proverbs 9:9-10

“Hear, o sons, a father’s instruction and be attentive, that you may gain insight, for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching.” Proverbs 4:1-2

A local politician

For this assignment, we will explore different types of readers, specifically in terms of their needsvalues, and attitudes. You will need to identify/create three groups—a primary group, a secondary group, and a gatekeeper group. You can be creative in your group criteria, but your purpose should center on potential stakeholders for the mock business or organization you created for your portfolio (if you haven’t decided yet, now is the time).

Once you have your groups, create a Reader Analysis Chart (see pp. 21-22, & 37 of our textbook for examples).

You can make up your own demographic groups; the following list may help you develop some ideas (they are listed in no particular order):

  • Technical writing students in this class
  • Your instructor
  • A 90 year-old grandmother
  • A military wife
  • A local politician
  • A girl still in high-school who is taking this class for college credit
  • A Four-Star General
  • A welder trying to get an education so he can get a better job
  • An unemployed father
  • A genius 12-year-old boy who finished school early
  • A prison inmate taking online college courses while serving time
  • A single mother
  • The CEO of a company looking to improve his technical writing skills on the side
  • A disabled veteran
  • A shut-in who is obsessed with fresh-water fish
  • A talking (and reading) dog named Foosball
  • Jim, Sarah, and Dominique from Human Resources
  • Clowns

Feel free to be creative. Remember, as it is with all technical writing tasks, you will need to take the time to edit and revise your work so it is clean, readable, informative, and attractive to your readers.

Once you have completed your Reader Analysis Chart, post it to the week one drop box.

Philosophy Discussion Post 2

1) Answer any THREE of  the nine questions listed below. You may pick three questions from the  same chapter or three questions from two different chapters. It’s  entirely up to you. These three posts must have a minimum of 100 words each. Anything less will result in a grade of ZERO without the possibility of a make-up post.

PLEASE MAKE SURE TO SUBMIT 3 SEPARATE POSTS: DO NOT ANSWER MORE THAN ONE QUESTION IN A SINGLE POST.

QUESTIONS:

Chapter 4: Epicurus

1.  Although Epicurus is a hedonist, he is clearly opposed to vulgar  hedonism. Can you find additional arguments for or against the theory of  vulgar hedonism? Is it not terribly “ judgmental” for us to claim that  some pleasures are “higher” or “ lower” than others? Shouldn’t we just  tolerate and accept differences of opinion in this area? Or does it make  more sense to argue that there is a natural hierarchy of pleasures and  pains?

2.  Epicurus believes that fear of divine retribution is the greatest  source of fear and anxiety. Do you agree with this assessment? Why or  why not?

3.  Epicurus argues that the best and happiest way of life is one in which  one seeks to satisfy on the most basic, natural and necessary desires.  Do you agree that embracing such a life of simplicity (no honor, fame,  luxury or wealth) is really more conducive to happiness and tranquility  than trying to “keep up with the Joneses”? If you said “yes,” then are  you already taking measures to live in the Epicurean manner?

Chapter 5: St. Thomas Aquinas

4.  How would St. Thomas defend himself (if, indeed, such a defense is  possible) against the charge of being “homophobic” (a word that did not  exist in his time, but which is fairly common today)? Would you find his  defense plausible? Why or why not?

5.  If one is not at all religious, is it still possible to take St.  Thomas’ natural law principle seriously? Could it still be relied upon  as a guide to living well? Explain.

Chapter 6: Thomas Hobbes

6. Do you think that being self-interested is a bad thing? If so, why? If not, why not?

7.  Compare Christ’s Golden Rule with Hobbes’ Golden Rule. Which do you  think is more effective in getting people to obey the laws, and why?

8.  Do you agree with Hobbes that our natural condition is one of  lawlessness and violence? How do you think you would behave if you knew  you could get away with whatever you wanted to? Do we only obey the laws  out of fear of punishment?

First, I would let the group know that the pastor needs to ensure that he is letting the audience know where the message of the text is going early in the message. (Gutierrez, Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016). This is so the congregation is not sitting wondering where the message is going so they can begin to prepare themselves to receive the message that God intends for them to hear. Then he needs to lay out the outline to support his main point that should be a sentence that hits on the theme. After you have nailed down the theme, combine the number of the main sections and the theme and you have two of the three ingredients for a surefire proposition. (Gutierrez, Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016).

Second, the main body should have supporting points that point to the theme, so it can all be pulled together. This is the skeletal framework that the body of main points can be built on. He should hit on possibly different translations, that can give a better understanding of scripture. Asking questions should be used in this section to make the intended audience think about what information they are receiving. Any historical or literary context that may be relevant may need to be included in this section as well. (Gutierrez, Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016). As he goes through the message he should be using transition words to make different sections flow, so the reader will not be left thinking about one section while he is deep into a different question or statement. The pastor needs to ensure that he conducts better Bible studies to find more relevant information to the bible message and can stay on topic and not begin to ramble. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is inspired by God and is profitable for teaching, for rebuking, for correcting, for training in righteousness, so that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.” (HCSB study Bible, 2010). While this is true but not all scripture or what he has learned about a certain Bible passage need to be in the information that the audience is receiving from the pastor.

Third, good conclusions should bring unity and clarity to your lesson. They should be organized and coherent. Conclusions should be personal as they draw listeners or readers toward personal decision. (Gutierrez, Cartwright & Hulshof, 2016). This part of the message needs to bring the reader to a crossroad that either asks a question for them to reflect on or an action that they should want to complete.

The idea of becoming a great teacher is a monumental task.  It harder than it appears.  To become a great teacher one must understand what they are teaching.  This is very true when teaching the Bible.  Developing a main idea and and understanding of the Bible Scripture is an extremely important task.  One must master what they are reading and make others comprehend that the scripture is saying. One must organize the information that was interpreted and communicate it effectively. Organization and planning is key to keeping your audience engaged.  Developing a main idea and a thorough knowledge is key to good teaching of Bible Passages.  A teachers interpretation of text is crucial in helping a students understanding of the Bible. Understanding a Bible passage for both the teacher and the student requires a devotion to learn, understand, and comprehend what the Bible is telling us.  The Scripture read with many different context.  Historical context can affect what the scripture means as well as who wrote it and why.  When reading a passage all of these things must be considered.  The interpretation may be different from various people if all of the factors are not considered.  A passion for the word and an effort to understand what the author is communicating will be evident when teaching the passage.  I believe a level of desire to understand the scripture must be present to appropriately teach a passage to someone else.   Proverbs 9:9  Instruct the wise and they will be wiser still; teach the righteous and they will add to their learning.  With all of the interpretations of the Bible, tools such as Bible dictionaries, study Bibles etc. are vital to gaining a deep knowledge to understand.  Having a complete knowledge on what you are teaching will develop credibility for a person to become an influence on others. As human being we tend to listen to people we trust and admire.  We listen to those who we know has a much deeper understanding of a subject than we do.  Matthew 5:19 Therefor anyone who sets aside one of the least of these commands and teaches others accordingly will be called least in the kingdom of heaven, buy whoever practices and teaches these commands will be called great in the Kingdom of heaven.  Being a good student of the word should also make us a great communicator of the word.  Through God we can retain and teach others his way.

Step 1: Thinking Back to Research Log Project Part 1

B. Original Search Statement

Record your original search statement from Research Log Project Part 1 (Step 3)

How will Step 1 be graded?

Step 1 will not receive a grade.

Step 2: UMUC Library Database Search

A. Database Search

Use the search statement you recorded in Step 1, Part B to search in one of the following UMUC library databases:

  • Academic Search Complete
  • MasterFILE Premier

Which database did you search?

Hint: Refer to Week 2 for a review of UMUC library databases.

B. Review Search Results

Review the search results from the database search you performed in Step 2, Part A and answer all of the following questions:

Were you able to successfully use the search statement from Step 1, Part B in the database, or did you receive an error/search failed message when trying your search?

If you received an error/search failed message from the database, were you able to identify the problem with your search statement?

Did you have to revise the search statement you created in Step 1, Part B in order to retrieve search results in the database search you performed in Step 2, Part A?

Identify and list additional keywords that you may use to search further on this topic by reviewing article titles, article abstracts, subject headings, and the articles themselves.

Hint: Refer to Week 2 for a review of databases, including subject headings in databases.

C. Revised Search Statement

Review your instructor’s comments from Research Log Project Part 1 for ways to improve your search statement. Review the additional keywords you identified in the box above (in Step 2, Part B). Based on this information, enter a revised search statement in the box below, using more effective search terms and techniques.

Hint: The revised search statement must be different in some way than the search statement that you used in Research Log Project Part 1 (Step 3) and recorded above in Step 1, Part B. Review the hints and examples in Research Log Project Part 1. For example, you might add, subtract, or change alternative search terms, or you might alter your use of truncation to discover more focused, relevant results. Refer to Week 1 for a review of Boolean operators, search statements, and advanced searching techniques.

How will Step 2 be graded?

Unsatisfactory (0–2 points): Does not list alternative relevant keywords, or the search statement is not revised, or both.

Satisfactory (3–4 points): The revised search statement is adequate and demonstrates some appropriate advanced searching techniques correctly, but does not incorporate instructor feedback from Research Log Project Part 1 or choice of alternative keywords does not reflect careful review of search results.

Excellent (5 points): Lists alternative relevant keywords that demonstrate the student reviewed article titles, abstracts, subject headings, and articles. The search statement is effectively revised based on both instructor feedback from Research Log Project Part 1 and database search results from Step 2 and expertly demonstrates advanced searching techniques.

Step 3: Subject Guide Search

Try your search statement in a different UMUC library database than the one you searched in Step 2, Part A. Consult a subject guide on the UMUC Library website appropriate to your research question to help you identify the relevant databases in which to research your topic.

A. Subject Guide

What is the name of the subject guide you used to locate an appropriate database in which to search?

Example: Guide to Linguistics Resources

Hint: Refer to Week 2 for a review of subject guides.

B. Database Name

What is the name of the database in which you searched?

Example: AnthroSource

Hint: This must be a different database than the database you searched in Step 2, Part A.

C. Search Statement

Enter the search statement you used to successfully search the database.

Hint: You can use the revised search statement that you recorded above (Step 2, Part C) or a new, further revised search statement. This must be the statement that you used to get the results recorded in Step 5 below.

How will Step 3 be graded?

Unsatisfactory (0–2 point): The selected database is not new or from an appropriate subject guide; the search statement did not work in the selected database.

Satisfactory (3–4 points): The selected database is from an appropriate subject guide, and the search statement is adequate and produces results in the selected database.

Excellent (5 points): The selected database is from an appropriate subject guide, and the search statement is effectively revised and produces results in the selected database.

Step 4: Select a Relevant Article

A. Citation Information

From the search results you retrieved in Step 3, select a full-text, in-depth article that is relevant to your research question. The article should not just be a brief overview of the topic but rather should address the key concepts of your research question and be as in-depth as possible, preferably written by an expert or credentialed author(s) in the field. Record the citation information in the spaces below.

Hint: Do NOT select newspaper or popular magazine articles, encyclopedia entries, or very brief journal articles (including editorials or letters to the editor), that would be useful only for background research. The article must be an in-depth article on your topic.

Article Title

Periodical/Publication Title (e.g., Harvard Business Review).

B. Article Type

Is the source (periodical/publication) of the article scholarly, trade, or popular?

Response #1

Cross-cultural workers and empowering of local churches and church planting movements

The word of God teaches people that for humans to succeed in all their endeavors, they need to work together and exchange ideas. Build a strong foundation and community for everyone to call home. Even the word of God spreading across the world is work that takes a team effort and hence this task cannot be entirely left to missionaries and preachers of the gospel. This brought the need for cross-cultural workers who could interpret the word of God across all cultures by understanding their worldview and putting into context the word of God so that people from a different culture can accept the word of God and receive salvation. Cross-cultural workers are however met with a lot of frustration coming from the language barrier and cultural rigidity and this makes empowering of local churches a difficult ask. Hence, in the spreading of the gospel to foreign lands and cultures in Africa and Asia, cross-cultural workers use local churches and church planting movements to transform a few local people into believers who would help in the spreading of the gospel to the rest of the population. This partnership results in success of the church where the cross-cultural worker establishes the word of God, communicates the visions of the gospel to the people, formulates relevant strategies on how to mobilize locals and expand, extend and expose them to the glory of God so that they can enjoy eternal salvation. [1]Cross-cultural workers need to stay humble, observe appreciate and respect the specific culture they are establishing the local church in, learn the local language as well as mission organizations, love the local people, local pastors, and the local church, be simple in conveying the word of God and continually make believers out of the locals who will, in turn, bring in more people to be transformed.[2]

Forum 7 (Module 7) – TurabianCOLLAPSE

Glenn Schwartz writes in his article, “Dependency”, of the great importance of local funding of mission work. He cites in his passage multiple lessons that point to the need to have local missionaries support tithing (giving) and providing for their own living (working).

Schwartz emphasized in his article that missionaries should emphasize supporting their own mission work – not encouraging local congregations to always expect support from others1. Local churches should be encouraged to raise their own support and work together to pool together local resources to meet the needs of the community2. These practices should take precedent over becoming overly dependent upon support from cross-cultural missionaries (those from sending organizations who come from outside the local community).

“Hacking Into Harvard”

“Hacking into Harvard” Please respond to the following:

Read Case 2.1: Hacking into Harvard, located here or on page 71 in your textbook. As applicants began to defend themselves against the penalties handed out by the business schools, they appealed to both consequentialist and no consequentialist criteria to support their actions. Some responded by pointing out that their intentions were never malicious, while others argued they did not think checking their application statuses would cause any real harm

. Review the case study and analyze the actions of the students from a Kantian perspective.

Consider whether the actions taken by the hackers were permissible according the standard of universal acceptability.
