Statistics for Business and Finance (BUS5SBF)

Assignment Tasks

Task 1

A. Organize your sample data in a spreadsheet as per “Instructions” above.
(Students who failed to follow the instructions will not be marked and “0” mark will be awarded to them)

B. What sampling method is used to select your sample data?

C. Do you think that is the best method of sampling? Why not? Why yes?

D. What is the best statistic used to compare the volatility in WEF, WI, and FS values? Why?

Task 2

Based on your sample data:

A. Develop the tabular form and graphical bar chart of WI based on the following classification: 1st Class = Very Poor
2nd Class = Poor
3rd Class = Moderate 4th Class = Rich
5th Class = Very Rich.

B. What is the most frequent group in your WI sample data? What does that indicate in terms of your data distribution?

C. Do you think your WI of sample data is normally distributed? Provide the “statistical reason” for your answer?

Task 3

A. What is the top 10% and bottom 10 % of your WEF household values?

B. What is the probability that your WI values will be less than or equal to $200?

C. What is the probability that FS will be equal to 2?

D. Is there any outlier(s) in your sample data of WEF? Show the graph or prove for that! If yes, what is the best statistic to measure the dispersity of your WEF?

Task 4

A. What is the probability that the head of household is woman and her HLE is Primary?

B. What is the probability that the head of household is man and has the College degree?

C. What is the proportion of having the Secondary as the highest degree from among males?

D. What is the proportion of having the Intermediate as the highest degree from among males?

E. Do you think that the events “gender of household head is male” and “having the College Degree” are independent?

For task 5 and onwards, assume that your sample data is normally distributed.

Task 5

A. Provide the most accurate of interval estimate of WI and interpret your result.

B. Provide the least accurate of interval estimate of WEF and interpret your result.

C. Provide the most and least accurate of interval estimates of FS and interpret your result.

D. Explain the main differences between the most and least accurate of interval estimate! Why they called as most and least accurate of interval estimate?

Task 6

A. After surveying many countries, Michael Scott, one of La Trobe University researchers believes that in order to be considered as the wealthy city, the average weekly income of thehousehold would be at least $1200. Based on the statement above, can you consider your sample data is from a wealthy city? (α = 0.10)

B. Michael Scott also believe one city can be considered as the fertile city if the average of family size of household is greater than 8 (μ FS > 8). Based on the statement above, can you consider your sample as the fertile city? (α = 0.05)

C. Michael Scott also believes one city can be considered as the obese city if the average spending of Weekly food expenditure of household is greater than or equal to 50. Based on the statement above, can you consider your sample as the obese city? (α = 0.01)

D.Based on the calculation above, which prediction is the most accurate and why?

Task 7

A. What is the relationship between the amount of WEF and FS in your sample?

B. What is the relationship between the amount of WI and gender of the family head in your sample?

C. How the HLE and WI do affected the WEF in your selected sample?

NB: Use the linear regression line to estimate, R, R 2 and graph in order to explain the relationship.

Task 8

As one of the largest city in USA, New York is also known as the food city. In this city people spend so much money in food, and Bill de Blasio, Mayor of New York believes, that the average amount of weekly income (WI) spent by households is not equal with your sample data. In order to prove that he collects a random sample of 50 households data of his city. (The data is attached on excel file New York tab).

Based on the Bill de Blasio's statement, perform the analysis on hypothesis testing with level of significance of 5%. Do you think Bill de Blasio's statement is correct?

You may consider the following assumptions while performing this test:

A. Populations for both of your sample and New York data are normally distributed and samples are independent.

B. Population variances of Weekly Food on Expenditure (WEF) are unknown and unequal.

Assignment – Develop an electronic Web portfolio, using a plain text editor (Notepad++)

1. Task Description

Develop an electronic work portfolio for yourself, which demonstrates your skills in as many relevant areas (of your degree) as possible. The portfolio should contain:

– Homepage that introduces you to possible employers.
– Resume – listing personal details, education, experience (work), qualifications, hobbies, other relevant information (these could be shown on separate pages if desired)
– Examples of your work/skills in four (4) different areas. Some examples:
o Design examples
o Graphics production and preparation
o Written and spoken communication skills
o The ability to work as part of a team and independently
o Project management
o Skills required by employers in your field of study.

Each skill area should include examples of your work which may be in the form of text, graphics, links to working projects or screen shots of projects.
Deliverables:
– Functioning web site (digital). Uploaded to your website on infotech (our Linux server).
o IBS students check with your local tutor about this requirement (as it may not be required).
– The University marker must have access to the source code, so you will also be required to provide a zip file containing the entire website (and design documentation as a single word document). For all Internal/External/Sydney/Melbourne and GXUST students this will be via MySCU (see the Submit Assignments folder) site.

2. Length

There should be at least six (6) pages in the website. There should be – at minimum – a Home page (index.html), a Resume page, and at least 4 pages with examples of your skills. One of these skills pages must detail your Web Development skills page.

In addition to the six (6) pages already mentioned, topics 9, 10, 11 and 12 contain continuous assessments that will add an additional two pages to your site. These additional pages should be linked to the Web Development skills page only – as they are related to these skills. For your convenience I have included all of the continuous assessments as an appendix of this document.

Remember that prospective employers have to read your portfolio, so keep it informative and intuitive. Typically students lose marks as a result of a content poor site (including lack of information, bad spelling and grammar) – don't make this mistake!

Overview

For this assignment, the students will work in team and create a written report that will review the applications of business intelligence analytics and Data Mining in different industry domains in decision making contexts.

The purpose of this assessment is to enable students to understand how business intelligence analytics and Data Mining techniques revolutionize businesses today.

Choose only any THREE (3) domains from the following list:

1. Customer Relationship Management – Data mining and analytics provides efficient tools to analyze customer data for the purpose of decision-making. Moreover, data mining aids analysis of buying patterns, determination of marketing strategies, segmentation of customers, stores or products.

2. Banking industry – Data mining techniques can be used to detect financial fraud, including credit card fraud, corporate fraud and money laundering.

3. Health Care industry – Health care applications include discovery of patterns in radiological images, analysis of microarray (gene-chip) experimental data to cluster genes. Moreover, chronic disease states and high-risk patients can be tracked.

4. Manufacturing industry – Large volumes of data from the manufacturing industry are untapped. The underutilization of this information prevents improved quality of products, energy efficiency, reliability, and better profit margins. Business analytics can be used in solving today's manufacturing challenges and to gain competitive advantage among other benefits.

5. Education industry – Major challenge in the education industry is to incorporate big data from different sources and vendors and to utilize it. Business analytics can be used to measure teacher's effectiveness, overall progress of a student over time and effectiveness of curriculum, etc.

6. Transportation industry – in this domain the business analytics help stakeholders in making effective decision in Traffic control, route planning, intelligent transport systems and congestion management (by predicting traffic conditions). Also, could be useful for route planning to save on fuel and time, for travel arrangements in tourism etc. revenue management, technological enhancements, logistics and for competitive advantage (by consolidating shipments and optimizing freight movement), etc.

Requirements

In this assignment, you will be required to form teams of approximately three (3) people. The findings of your research study will be presented through:
• A group research report
• Interactive presentation.

The report
The report will take the form of a well-researched academic report of approximately 3000 words. Diagrams or tables are encouraged to be used to support your statements. The report should be well supported with appropriate references from reliable sources. You should include academic journals, books, theses, trade magazines and well-respected sources of related Internet materials that you find relevant. Please note – Wikipedia is NOT considered a reliable source to quote in an academic document of this type, without backup from other well reputed sources.

Your report should present as a collective effort, not a series of submissions by various team members. It is expected to FLOW as one document. Each team member's contribution should be clearly identified in the report, with a notation about which section he/she wrote about. Table of contents, reference list and contribution statements do not count towards the final words count. All reports must use the APA referencing style

The Presentation

Duration: 20 minutes for each team

For the presentation component of this assessment, your team will focus on the following:

1. Business analytics and Data Mining techniques specific to the chosen domains

2. Illustration of applications of the above business analytics and Data Mining techniques within the chosen domains

3. Explanation on how these specific business analytics and Data Mining techniques added business value and generated new business opportunities within the chosen domains

4. Any Challenges that associated with the application of the above business analytics and Data Mining techniques for the chosen domains

In the hope of spending a little more time away from the bakery, they have discussed with Natalie the possibility of her becoming one of the shareholders of Koebel’s Family bakery Ltd. Natalie would assume the fill-time position as administrator. Natalie could continue to provide cookie-making lessons and sell mixers; however, that would now be done by the Koebel’s Family Bakery rather than by Natalie’s Cookie Creations.

These are balances extracted of Koebel’s Family bakery Ltd as at August 1, 2013:

$6 cumulative preferred shares, 10, 000 shares authorized, none issued

Common shares, unlimited number of shares authorized, 200 shares issued           $  200

Retained earnings                                                                                                                   $  116,251

Profit before income tax for the year ended July 31, 2014, was $255,823.

The company has an 18% income tax rate. A cash dividend of $85, 000 was declared on July 15, 2014, to common shareholders of record on July 20, 2014, and was paid on July 30, 2014.

Based on the bakery’s success, the Koebels would like to issue 10 shares to Natalie for $1, 200 per share. Natalie would contribute the fair value of Cookie Creations’ assets in exchange for the shares of Koebel’s Family Bakery as follows:

Cookie Creations

Cash         $8,050

Accounts Receivable  $   800

Merchandise Inventory        $1,200

Supplies    $   450

Equipment $1,500

The sale of shares by Koebel’s Family Bakery to Natalie is expected to take place on August 1, 2014.  Currently, Janet and Brian each own 100 shares. Assume Koebel’s family bakery reports using ASPE.

Instructions:

Prepare the       journal entries required for the cash dividend declared on July 15     and payment on July 30, 2014.

Prepare the       statement of retained earnings for the year ended July 31, 2014.

Prepare the       shareholder’s equity section of the balance sheet at July 31,         2014.

How do you think      the value of $1,200 per share was determined when Janet and Brian were attempting to come up with the number of shares to be sold to         Natalie? Do you think that the number of shares Natalie received in         exchange for the assets of Cookie Creations is fair? Why or Why not?

Question 1

Pacific Telemet Ltd. manufactures a high end smart phone with dual sim cards that is popular with business executives who travel overseas frequently. Related financial data for this product for the last year is as follows:

Sales 12,000 units

Selling price $460 per unit

Variable manufacturing cost $184 per unit

Fixed manufacturing costs $360,000

Variable selling and administrative costs $36 per unit

Fixed selling and administrative costs $600,000.

The CEO is under pressure from the Board of Directors to increase the profitability of the phones and has asked executives from different departments for suggestions. Three managers have responded with the following ideas:

a) The production manager, David Groate, suggests making improvements to the quality of the product. These quality improvements would increase the variable costs by $36 per unit. This would be accompanied by a $60,000 national advertising campaign which he expects would boost sales volume by 30%.

b) The sales manager, Kirsten Arnold, believes that the product is unique, but not yet well known enough. Based on her market research, she feels that advertising should be increased by $120,000 and that the product would also be able to bear an increase in price of $60 with sales volume reduced by 12% from the current levels.

c) The marketing director, Jess Sutherland, wants to undertake a promotion campaign where a $40 rebate is offered to the first 2,500 phones sold. She expects that the rebate program would boost sales by an additional 2,000 units if spending on advertising was increased by $50,000.

You have been asked by the CEO, Sherri Watkins, to comment on each of these three proposals before she presents them to the Board of Directors. Draft a report in response to this request. You are not asked to make one particular choice or recommendation, but rather to explore the potential strengths and weaknesses that includes discussion on the breakeven, potential profits and, where possible, the margin of safety related to each proposal. Keep in mind that the sales volumes should be treated as estimates only and your report should consider potential variations in actual sales and their effects. Give both qualitative and quantitative support to your comments.

Question 2

You are the accountant for Go-Go-Grow Ltd, a children's electric toy car manufacturer that is located in Geelong and has customers in Australia and the USA. Their estimated current sales volume is 5,000 units per month and based on this level of production, the company has budgeted the following costs and prices per unit:

Manufacturing Costs per unit (Based on production of 5,000 units per month)

Direct Material Cost $150.00

Direct Labour Cost 75.00

Variable Factory Overhead 35.00

Fixed Factory Overhead 40.00

Total Manufacturing Cost 300.00

Selling & Administrative Costs

Variable Selling and Administrative Cost 35.00

Fixed Selling and Administrative Cost 25.00 60.00

Total Cost Per Unit 360.00

Selling Price Per Unit $720.00

Mantel Ltd is an overseas company that sells toy cars all over the world, with the majority of their market to wealthy new parents in China and India. They have approached Go-Go-Grow about obtaining a quote for a special one-off order as they would like to purchase 20,000 toy cars. As this will be a special order sale, there will be no costs incurred for variable selling and administrative costs and no additional fixed costs will be incurred.

This order is because their existing supplier has suffered substantial earthquake damage to their premises, but the CEO of Mantel Ltd also hinted to your CEO that if they are satisfied with the product, this might not be the last deal between the two businesses.

Required:

1. Given this knowledge, what amount should Go-Go-Grow Ltd. bid for this contract in each of the following circumstances:

a) The Go-Go-Grow’s annual factory capacity is 90,000 units.

b) The Go-Go-Grow’s annual factory capacity is 75,000 units. (To fulfil the order, you may have to pull the product from your regular production).

2. Assuming that the annual factory capacity is 90,000 units, prepare a report for your CEO explaining your justification for the bid price that you came up with in 1 a). Discuss the possible opportunities and potential disadvantages with accepting this contract with Mantel. Give both quantitative and qualitative support to your discussion.

Question 3

Describe your own background before you came to do your MBA at Southern Cross University.

How has your earlier educational background influenced your understanding of this subject so far?

When you complete ACC00724, which accounting tools in either Financial or Management accounting do you think will be most useful for your future career? Why?
