Discussion Question

Environmental justice ensures that all communities are treated fairly and are meaningfully involved in environmental-based decisions, such as where to build a new sanitary landfill, hazardous waste repository, industrial plant, or any other such site that could create an environmental hazard for those who live in the area.

Describe a time when environmental injustice occurred. This can include any current or past events where the community was not fairly and meaningfully involved in the decision-making process.

Who is or was negatively affected? What negative health effects could or did the community experience? What other social factors compound the negative health outcomes of the community?

Discussion Question

Environmental laws, regulations, policies and programs are designed to protect the public from environmental hazards that negatively impact human health.  Choose an environmental health issue that is occurring in your community that you plan to address in your advocacy newsletter.

After choosing an issue, answer the following questions:

1. What is the issue and why is it a problem? Provide statistics, research by local governmental and/or non-governmental agencies, information from news outlets, etc. to illustrate the problem.
2. What actions, if any, is the community taking to address this issue? Are there laws, regulations, policies or programs that might be helpful in developing solutions?

Discussion Question

Describe a current emerging environmental health issue. This could include concerns caused by a recent natural disaster, man-made disaster or disease outbreak from food, water or vectors.

Have we dealt with similar issues in the past? How can environmental health professionals use previous experience to respond to the current problem?

Now that you have completed this course, what do you think is the greatest environmental health challenge humans will face into the future? What current evidence (research, statistics, etc.) backs up your decision? How will environmental health professionals be important to addressing this problem?
