What are the implications of generational diversity on effective leadership?
REPLY TO MY CLASSMATE’S RESPONSE TO THE ABOVE QUESTIONS AND EXPLAIN WHY YOU AGREE? (A MINIMUM OF 125 WORDS or MORE)
There are basically 5 different generations alive in today’s world. They are traditionalists, baby boomers, generation X, generation Y and Generation Z (Marketing Teacher). There are different dates depending on what source you find but they are similar in their beliefs. Starting with the traditionalist or 1945 and before births. These are the doer’s, hard workers, team players, community minded and avoid debt minded (Marketing Teacher). Next, is the baby boomers; those born between 1946-1964. These are known as the “Workaholic’s”. This generation is hard working and tend to respect authority (Marketing teacher). Next, is Gen X; those born between 1965-1980. This generation puts a lot of emphasis on “self”. They strive to be independent, individualistic and entrepreneurial (Pew Research center). Generation Y’s births are between 1981-2000. These were nurtured more by parents and feel a lot of academic and debt pressure (Pew Research Center) Finally, Gen Z’s. These were born after 2001. This is the “technological” generation. This generation has grown up in the digital world. They are tech savvy, creative and on track to be the most well-educated generation yet (Pew Research Center).
In order to lead effectively, a leader must be able to get messages across that each person can understand. This means that a leader must adapt his/her teaching style depending on who they are leading. In other words, a 50-year-old is going to respond differently to a task than a 20-year-old. If time is not spent doing this, the leader might not get the targeted result they are looking for. Effectively leading a plethora of generations boils down to the ability to adapt their leadership styles to fit the situation and its members.
